Turbo Bandit

Click here for pics and description of build

When the zx12R had to go, I took a gsxr1100 project in part exchange.

The gixxer was in need of nut and bolt restoration, but did have benefit of 2 engines and lots of spares and duplicated parts.  I also acquired other bits including a Honda Fireblade front end, propipe exhaust, various wheels , big bore kit and the like.

It seemed perfect as a project for me to stay in touch with biking whilst in the fiscal and marital biking wilderness.  "I will learn spannering", "Make still feel a biker", "Hide in barn in evenings", "I can turn barn into a decent workshop", "It will be cheap biking"....................................

A bit of a mistake on my part.  The work needed was beyond my meagre skills.  I have trouble working to the nearest millimetre so thous were a bit ambitious.
Ebay, bike web sites and personal contacts proved a wonderful resource so I broke the gixxer and sold on the parts as they were worth more to others as parts than off loading the lot as a project.  So judicious swaps, good sales and purchases using the sale money has resulted in the Turbo Bandit Project.
Briefly the plan is to build a road legal drag bike using a lengthened 1998 bandit chassis, a bandit motor taken out to 1216cc with a MrTurbo draw through turbo fitted.  A bit old school, sorry, SKOOL.
Specification - has changed since the original build.

Chassis:  Ex Paul "Grumpy" Watson drag bike chassis, latterly campaigned by "Scooby" and "Bam Bam" in ACU and Straightliners series.  Lengthened swinging arm with modified Ohlins shock. Clip-ons on forks dropped through yolk.  Cut-away seat.  Upper bandit fairing  with mirrors for road use

Engine:  1998 Suzuki Bandit engine, bored out to 1216cc and generally refreshed by Roger Upperton.

  • Compression lowered to 9:1 to suit turbo application, using hayabusa pistons
  • Manual cam chain adjuster,
  • GSXR 1100 coil spring clutch conversion and MTC lockup,
  • Cometic gaskets,
  • Orient Express heavy duty studs and nuts,
  • Titanium valve retainers
  • Oil temperature guage
  • Stainless steel bolt conversion.

Turbo:  Mr Turbo draw through (originally for KZ1000) utilising the following:

  • RayJay 377B25 turbo,
  • Mikuni HSR45 replacing original S & S Super B carb
  • Mr Turbo plenum
  • Mr Turbo 2 stage waste gate replacing Deltagate 2 waste gate
  • Modified GSX turbo header pipes
  • Exhausts & dump pipes:  modified Mr Turbo items
  • Mr Turbo boost guage, 2 stage boost controller by Bigcc with handlebar thumbswitch (boost to 25 psi)
  • Goodrodge oil lines for turbo bearing housing

  • Dyna coils with MSD leads
  • GSXR1100 instruments
  • Facet fuel pump and fuel regulator (manual adjust)
  • Dyna 2000 programmable ignition module
  • Dyna shift minder and shift light
  • MRE Air shifter
  • Standard loom to allow all road legal lighting
  • Upgraded Nissin calipers
  • HEL braided brake and clutch lines
  • Goodridge larger capacity oil cooler,
  • Crankcase oil breather and catch tank.
Current power is below the original aim to achieve about 180 rear wheel bhp on low boost and super unleaded fuel, but with facility to push up to 250+ rwbhp on higher boost (using race fuel / avgas) for racing or sheer silliness on road.  Actual figures are 170rwbhp at 10psi and untested on second stage (25psi)
